Dear residents and business owners of Langemarckstraße,

In 2022, the Neustadt Advisory Council decided to rename Langemarckstraße to Georg-Elser-Allee.
Public discussions took place before and after this decision. A citizens' initiative submitted a petition
to keep the current street name.

The renaming mainly affects residents and businesses
(e.g. address changes or updating identification documents).

At the request of the Senate, a broader public participation process is now taking place.
The final decision will be made by the Neustadt Advisory Council.
Your opinion will be taken into account.

Why is the street called "Langemarckstraße"?

• The Nazi regime named the street in 1937.


• Langemark-Poelkapelle is a town in Belgium.


• Many people from different countries died there during World War I.


• The "Langemarck story" is a false heroic myth from 1914.


• It was later misused for Nazi war propaganda.


• Before 1937, parts of the street had different names.

Who was Georg Elser?

• Georg Elser resisted the Nazi regime.


• On 8 November 1939, he attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler.


• The assassination attempt failed.


• He was murdered on 9 April 1945 in Dachau concentration camp.


• Supporters see him as a role model for civil courage and resistance.

Arguments for renaming

• Clear rejection of Nazi ideology.


• Georg Elser represents courage and resistance.


• "Allee" refers to historic street names before Nazi rule.

Le conseil de quartier de Neustadt a décidé en 2022 de renommer la rue.
Des débats publics ont eu lieu et une pétition a été déposée.

Le changement concerne principalement les résidents et les entreprises.

À la demande du Sénat, une participation citoyenne élargie est organisée.
La décision finale revient au conseil de quartier.
